The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is a poker tournament held annually in Las Vegas. The first WSOP in 1970 was an invitational wherein Benny Binion invited six of the best known poker players to The Horseshoe Casino. At first, the WSOP grew slowly. It was twelve years before the WSOP drew 52 participants, in 1982. In the early 1980s satellite tournaments were introduced allowing people to win their way into the various events for less than the full entry fees. By 1987, there were over 2,100 entrants in the entire series. Participation peaked in 2006, with 8,773 people participating in the Main Event alone.

The World Poker Tour (WPT) is a series of international poker tournaments featuring most of the world's professional players. In 2008, the WPT started offering bracelets to its event champions. Players who won a title prior to the release of the bracelet, were given one retroactively. The World Poker Tour is a collection of Texas holdem poker tournaments held internationally, but mainly in the United States. The television show and the broadcasts of the World Series of Poker have led to a boom in the table game across American homes, in local casino poker rooms and online.

The Poker After Dark format features an "intimate look at one table as it develops over the week." Blinds start at $100/$200 and slowly escalate. The series was originally structured as a series of week long No Limit Texas hold 'em mini tournaments for six top poker professionals. Each week the players vied for a $120,000 winner takes all prize pool, with each paying a $20,000 buy in. By the end of the fifth show, a winner is determined. The sixth show is a "director's cut" that includes excerpts from the action from the previous five days. Beginning with season 4, the producers began to experiment with different formats, including 2 weeks of cash game play, and a week consisting of a double limination Heads Up battle between the first 4 winners of the National Heads-Up.

High Stakes Poker was unique among televised poker series because it did not take place in a tournament setting. Instead, the program showed a high stakes ring game. The minimum buy-in to the game is US$100,000, but players have bought in for as much as $1,000,000, such as Daniel Negreanu in Season 1 and Brad Booth in Season 3. For part of the fourth season, the minimum buy in was $500,000. The first episode with the minimum $500,000 buy-in was broadcast on November 5, 2007. The minimum cash buy in for the fifth season increased to $200,000 – the largest buy-in for an entire run of a television series. Unlike tournament poker, the chips involved represent real money. If a player loses his initial buy in, that player may rebuy a minimum of $50,000.
